Works in the Ashmoleon

‘Twelve Months of the Year (May/ June)’ & ‘Twelve Months of the Year (Nov/Dec)’, woven calendar pages, 30 x 30 cm, 2023

Thrilled to announce that two recent works will be on display in the Daisy Linda Ward Still Life Gallery at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford until 31 July 2026

Accompanying wall text:

These two contemporary artworks are intriguing artistic responses to the Dutch and Flemish still-life paintings hanging in this room.

Aliki Braine has cleverly recycled old wall calendars issued by the Ashmolean, which she found in a charity shop. The artist first shreds the illustrations in horizontal and vertical strips and then weaves two images together to create a new artwork. These gridded works mimic and inflate the pixels of digital reproduction.

The work on the right features Willem van Aelst's, A Vase of Flowers with a Watch (hanging alongside) and Henricus Maria van Weerdts, Flower Piece with Oysters and Roll.
